2016 SAPC-RCGP Yvonne Carter Award winner announced
Professor Yvonne Carter CBE was an outstanding and inspirational leader who had a remarkable impact on academic general practice. To commemorate her contribution to primary care research the Royal College of General Practitioners, through its Scientific Foundation Board, and the Society for Academic Primary Care have jointly instituted the Yvonne Carter Award for Outstanding New Researcher.
In this, the 6th year of the award, we received another outstanding set of applicants. The Awards Panel, consisting of senior academics from both SAPC and the RCGP, once again had the daunting task of seeking to select a single winner.
After much discussion, the panel have named the 2016 winner as Dr Kamal Mahtani, an NIHR Clinical Lecturer at Oxford Dept of Primary Health Care Scientists. Although only recently qualified as a GP, Kamal has already made a significant contribution to academic primary care. The panel were particularly impressed with his plans for the use of the award - to support further development of an international network of academic primary care leadership.
Kamal will receive his award at the SAPC ASM in Dublin, where he will also give a short presentation on his work. You can read more from Kamal in this RCGP interview.
Joanne Reeve, Chair of this year's YCA Panel, also added:
This year's decision was harder than ever. With such an outstanding selection of candidates to chose from, it did feel at one stage that we might not be able to choose between. But ultimately, we succeeded! And are delighted to be presenting Kamal with the 2016 award.
The panel also wanted to pass on our very sincere congratulations to all who applied this year. You gave us great pleasure in reading about and discussing your work. We all feel proud to be part of a discipline with such a bright future. Congratulations to you all.
Nominations for the 2017 Award will open in September 2016.
