SAPC Executive - Elections 2022

Want to be part of a vibrant dynamic crew supporting, shaping and championing the field of academic primary care?

There are a number of upcoming changes in the SAPC Executive team, SAPC Executive, which means that we are advertising for a number of roles.

Rupert Payne, currently a general member of the executive, who will become co-chair at the AGM on 6th July along with Duncan Shrewsbury.

Jo Protheroe is stepping down from the role of Treasurer after 10 years but will remain on the exec until the end of her current elected term of three years which will be in July 2023. 

Suzanne Richards is stepping down after serving on the executive committee for 6 years (two terms) and has been co-lead of PHoCuS since 2018.

Thank you to Jo and Suzanne for their work over the years and to Rupert and Duncan for taking on the role of co-chairs.

The Executive team lead the work of SAPC to raise the profile of Academic Primary Care, build a vibrant workforce by helping people get into and progress in APC, and enhance the impact of our work through supporting collaborations.

Vacancies

We're now inviting expressions of interest in standing for this year's election.

We will be holding an election for the role of Treasurer and one general member place on SAPC Executive, to serve for three years from July 2022-2025. 

We would welcome nominations for those with an interest in taking on the role of Treasurer (please see description below) and someone who could be interested in taking on the role of co-lead of the primary healthcare scientist group (alongside Julia Hiscock) or the Comms lead role.  The role of Treasurer must be an elected member of the executive but the other two roles can be held by either an elected member or a co-opted member.  Please get in touch if you are interested in joining the SAPC exec but not necessarily for these roles.

Nominations for general members

The deadline for submitting nominations is Saturday 30th April 2022. Please complete the nomination form. You may self-nominate and let us know if you need a counter-signature.

You must be a member of SAPC to stand, you can join us here! 

You may nominate yourself but must be proposed and seconded by SAPC members. 

If there are more nominations than places available Civica Election Services will run the elections for us. Ballot notification will be sent shortly after the closing date for nominations, with an expected closing date of mid-June 2022. Results will be announced at the AGM during the virtual SAPC annual scientific meeting 2022.

Specific roles

Here are the roles we are looking to fill:

Treasurer

The role of Treasurer must be held by an elected member of the executive even if newly elected.

Jo Protheroe has been treasurer of SAPC since 2012 and has decided to step down after 10 years.  Jo will remain on the executive committee as a general member.

SAPC is therefore looking for a new treasurer.  Here are the key areas of the role:

• To oversee the finances of SAPC to ensure the continued financial stability of the Society 
• Approve the year end accounts which are prepared by the Society’s accountants working with the secretariat
• Attend executive committee meetings and be involved in decision making

SAPC follows RCGP’s model of retaining 18 months of running costs on deposit.

The day to day running of income and expenditure and financial statements for the executive meetings are handled by the secretariat.

The role of PHoCuS co-lead or Comms lead could be elected or co-opted.

The SAPC primary care scientists group (PHoCuS) is currently led by Julia Hiscock and Suzanne Richards.  Suzanne is stepping down from this role and we are looking for a replacement to work alongside Julia.

The group represents the interests of SAPC members who are not GPs although GPs are welcome to attend the meetings.  The group holds a meeting at the SAPC ASM to give PHoCuS members and update of activities throughout the previous year and from time to time holds on-line meetings when needed for specific projects throughout the year.  The PHoCuS group also meets at the SAPC regional meetings organised via the SAPC regional meeting liaison lead and regional PHoCuS champions for the relevant area.  These meetings give PHoCuS staff an opportunity to raise issues that they would like to be considered by the SAPC executive. It is also a great way for researchers new to academic primary care to meet colleagues with similar professional backgrounds to themselves. 

Topics often discussed at meetings are career paths, early and mid-career issues for PHoCuS staff.

Comms lead

We are looking to appoint a new co-opted member to the SAPC executive committee to lead our communications group. Recent activity of the Comms group includes the updating of our website’s structure and the launch of a new blog. However, the main focus for the comms lead would be the regular communication and promotion of SAPC work and academic primary care more generally (via social media and other formats). The aim of this is not only to strengthen and expand the area of academic primary care, but also to encourage people to attend our annual scientific meeting (ASM) and become members of SAPC.

The post is open to all SAPC members. We would particularly welcome applications from early and middle career academics – teachers and researchers. No technical knowledge of websites, publishing etc is required. All we seek is enthusiasm and a desire to help us improve our communication within SAPC and with our external partners. As a co-opted member you would be required to attend quarterly executive committee meetings, one of which would be at the SAPC ASM, for which you would receive free registration.
